These 3 Tips Will Help You Maintain the Shine of Your Engagement Ring!

17 Jul 2019 5:58:31 pm

If you aren’t accustomed to wearing fine diamond jewellery on a regular basis (which most of us aren’t), a sparkling (and pricey) diamond engagement ring proudly sitting on your left hand can give you jitters!

Since it’s one of your most prized possession with lots of sentimental value attached, you want to ensure it stays as sparkling as new for years to come.

Like most to-be brides, you might be clueless about how to take care of engagement ring - Whether you should wear it while taking a shower or doing laundry. Here are a few useful tips by various industry experts that will clear your apprehensions:

1. Know When to Take Off Your Ring

It might take a while for you to get used to a dazzling ring, and so you want to be extra cautious to protect it. This sense of protectiveness can tempt you to slip your ring off every time you wash your hands or do some cooking.  But, you don’t have end up leaving the ring behind at a restaurant or at a store or at a cafe, so try to resist the urge to take off the ring every time you wash your hands.

So, when is the right time to take off the ring? Take off your ring and keep it a safe place under the following circumstances:

  • While doing chores that involve the use of heavy chemicals. For example: During yard work or heavy cleaning. Harsh chemicals may affect the metal of your ring and sadly there’s no fixing that.
  • Before applying lotions or creams as it could create a buildup under your settings and dull its natural sparkle.
  • Take off your ring before going for a swim at a beach or a pool. The cold temperature of the water could make fingers shrink, allowing the ring to slip off and getting lost in the water.
  • When you’re being very physically active or lifting heavy things – we can always tell that you’ve been lifting dumbbells with your ring on!

2. Get Your Ring Insured

No matter how unpleasant it sounds, but there are always possibilities of your ring getting lost or stolen, so it’s best to take precautions.

We understand no amount of money can ever replace the emotional connection you share with your ring, but the least you can do is get the ring professionally appraised and buy an insurance based on its value. Purchasing insurance for your ring gives you the extra protective cover. We can chat to you about how we recommend you go about insurance, some dos and don’ts, and run through some precautions with you!

3. Keep it Clean

Over time, dirt and oil buildup on the ring blocks the light interaction, which makes the diamond appear lustreless and worn out!  To ensure maximum sparkle, it is recommended to clean your engagement ring at least once a month. The best part is that you can easily clean your ring at home. Take some warm water in a bowl, mix a mild dishwashing detergent and soak the ring for about half an hour.

Take the ring out and scrub it gently with a soft bristle toothbrush. Rinse and get a dazzlingly clean ring.

Nothing beats a jeweller’s clean – you can also bring your ring in any time for us to give it a quick clean in the ultrasonic cleaner, which effectively shakes the dirt out from under the diamond settings where toothbrush bristles may not reach. It is recommended that you bring your ring in for a full cleaning service every 12 months or so for a small fee.

Never use abrasive cleaners on your jewellery; toothpaste, Jif, and household cream cleaners will scratch your ring and leave it looking dull and worn! Dishwashing detergent is best to use because it will break down the grease buildup from skin, lotions, etc.
